Chapter 1: CINQUANTA 50-Passenger O-Fuselage Quadcopter

1. Size (top view) comparison between CINQUANTA & Fokker 50 (a 50-passenger fixed wing aircraft).

50 CONCEPT AIRCRAFTS is a book of 50 chapters. Each chapter describes 1 conceptual design of aircraft that I have produced, therefore there are 50 designs described in this book. Some of the concepts were produced many years before and they were refined over the years and finally published in this book, while some are new.

50 CONCEPT AIRCRAFTS is a book I wrote as a gift to the world because God has allowed me to live in this world for 50 years. The idea to write and publish this illustrated book came to reality after I have decided to produce a thing that I can contribute significantly to the world, and since I have been producing conceptual designs of aircraft, I compiled 50 of them in a book and make them available for anybody who is interested, free of copyright - the reason all the illustrations in this book are not marked. This chapter 1 of the book was completed on 26 January 2019, my 50th birthday.

"CINQUANTA" is Italian for "FIFTY". It is the name given to the conceptual design I have completed today to commemorate my 50th birthday. It is a conceptual design of 50-passenger squircle (square with rounded corners) quadcopter.

2. Top view of CINQUANTA.

Conventionally, a passenger quadcopter has its cabin at the center of 4 propellers. To carry a significant number of passengers, for example 50, the cabin has to be of significant size, and since it is located at the center, the result is a very large size quadcopter. This is not practical as such conventional 50-passenger quadcopter will be much bigger than 50-passenger fixed wing aircraft.

3. Side view of CINQUANTA.

CINQUANTA is an attempt to produce 50-passenger quadcopter with smaller size, that is even smaller than 50-passenger fixed wing aircraft. This is made possible by the application of squircle cabin - cabin along the perimeter of a square of rounded corners, with the 4 propellers within it. It is a revolutionary design for a quadcopter as the cabin is outside, around the propellers, instead of the propellers being outside around the cabin as in conventional design quadcopter. This concept is also called "O-fuselage".

4. Size (side view) comparison between CINQUANTA & Fokker 50.

CINQUANTA has 4 curve seats for 13 adults, each positioned at each corner of the cabin, accommodating 52 adults, which are 50 passengers and 2 crews. The 2 crews are 1 pilot and 1 security officer, and they can sit anywhere on the 4 curve seats among the passengers. The pilot controls the flight of CINQUANTA using only a kneeboard tablet computer strapped to his/her thigh.

5. CINQUANTA's pilot uses a kneeboard tablet computer to control the flight.

CINQUANTA has no forward or rearward direction, as it moves horizontally in all directions. Therefore everybody aboard sit facing outward.

6. Cutaway top view of CINQUANTA showing 1 of the 4 curved seats & 2 lobbies.

CINQUANTA has 4 lobbies each with foldable ramp doubling as door for entrance and exit. The ramps enable the entrance and exit of wheelchairs and wheeled payloads.

7. Cutaway side view of  CINQUANTA showing the cross section of the fuselage with the side of 2 curved seats visible.

CINQUANTA is powered by 4 synchronized electric engines. Each engine has 2 contra-rotating propellers of twin blades to provide optimum thrust and torque cancellation. Each propeller is also overlapping the other 2 so that they can have bigger diameter, as the diameter of propeller is significant for thrust generation. The overlapping of propellers is also made possible due to the unique design of CINQUANTA, where there is no cabin at the center to obstruct the overlapping.

There are straight tubes connecting the engines. Each tube houses a shaft that transfers rotational energy from a working engine to a failed engine if there is such case. This significantly increases the operational safety of CINQUANTA, because all the 4 propellers can still remain operational and synchronized if any 1 or 2 of the engines fail.

CINQUANTA will be suitable as "city hopper" (as in Fokker 50), but with the advantage of electric VTOL (vertical take-off & landing) operation at "vertiport" (VTOL airport) in city centers.
